At present, the paths to achieve car lightweight are mainly divided into three categories: 1. Among them, lightweight materials are the most direct and effective method. Replacing steel with other materials is the main means of lightweighting automobiles. From the perspectives of cost, weight reduction potential, and manufacturing process, aluminum used in cars has obvious advantages as a lightweight material.

1. In terms of cost, high-strength steel is cheaper, followed by aluminum. The so-called high-strength steel refers to steel with a yield strength of 210 to 550 MPa and a tensile strength of 340 to 780 MPa. It is widely used in door anti-collision beams, bumpers, A/B/C pillar reinforcement plates, door thresholds, and floor channels and various structural parts. The aluminum sheet cost is 1/2 to 1/3 of magnesium alloys, and about 1/5 of carbon fiber.

2. In terms of weight reduction potential, aluminum alloys are weaker than carbon fiber and magnesium alloys, and significantly stronger than high-strength steels. The density of aluminum alloy is 1.8g/cm3, which is 1.5 times that of magnesium alloy and carbon fiber, and about 3 times that of high-strength steel. In terms of weight reduction potential, compared with steel parts, aluminum alloys are 30%, and magnesium alloys are 35%-45%.

3. From the manufacturing process point of view, the aluminum alloy process is relatively mature, with high efficiency and moderate cost. High-strength steel has obvious cost advantages in terms of process, and the manufacturing process is mature.

With the application of new process technologies such as hot stamping and die-casting, the application of aluminum alloy sheet reflects high production efficiency, and the cost of forming process is moderate.

The cost of magnesium alloy forming process is relatively high and easy to be oxidized, mainly using cold connection; carbon fiber material forming and connection process efficiency is low, and the cost is also high.

Aluminum alloy has gradually become the mainstream material for lightweight automobiles. To sum up, compared with high-strength steel, aluminum alloy has higher specific strength, lower density, and greater potential for weight reduction; compared with magnesium alloy, it has lower cost and more mature forming process and connection method.
